The production-spec 2028 Jaguar Type 01 is faithful to the initial concept — whether you were hoping for that or not.
We’ve been reckoning with Jaguar’s dramatic rebirth for nearly two years now, since it initially rolled out the contentious and polarizing Type 00 concept. Fast forward, and here we are with the full reveal of the production Type 01, including full specs, delivery dates and pricing. If you were looking for Jaguar to make an about-face from the concept, you’ll be disappointed here, but you’ll be pretty pleased if you did like this bold new direction for a modern Jag. The model customers will actually buy does not deviate much from what we saw back in December 2024.
No matter which way you slice it, the 2028 Jaguar Type 01 is the epitome of a design-first car. It looks nothing like any previous Jaguar, nor any other luxury car on the road, and that was a purposeful decision.
Even being a fully electric sedan, you get an enormously long hood with a relatively short rear overhang, aesthetic flourishes and strong character lines pretty much everywhere, and of course Jaguar’s new, heavily stylized corporate logo. The emblematic Leaper logo is still there, but it’s positioned just ahead of the front doors and below the proportionally huge charging port door (more on that in a moment).
If you thought the exterior is overstated, the interior isn’t much less subtle.
As big and bold as the Jaguar Type 01’s exterior proportions are, you’d expect a massive cabin with plenty of room for passengers, right? Well, not exactly. The car’s center “spine” hems in each of the four passengers a bit, as does the low-looking roofline with its large, panoramic moonroof. There is a fair amount of storage both on the door cars and in the center console, though, while Jaguar made the decision not to overwhelm the IP with acres and acres of screens. You just get one main 24-inch OLED display positioned in front of the driver. On the center console and for the second row, you also get a couple 7-inch portrait touchscreens that handle your climate and seat controls.
Most of the driver’s engagement with Jaguar’s Nvidia-backed system is through switches on the two-spoke steering wheel. The audio system is also a bit unusual even to other luxury cars, where you get more than a dozen speakers in a soundbar arrangement that rises from the dashboard. In the headrests and ceiling, there are even more speakers both to augment the sound experience and aid with the car’s active noise cancellation system.
What about performance?
Jaguar is making a major play for the ultra-luxe market with the Type 01, but it’d be a real shame to forget about the brand’s sporting roots in the process. On paper, at least, things look solid: This is the most powerful Jaguar ever, bar none. And keep in mind the brand has rolled out plenty of powerhouses over the years rocking supercharged V8s.
To that end, the 2028 Jaguar Type 01 produces 1,016 horsepower (1,030 PS) and 1,007 lb-ft of torque through three electric motors. One of those motors is up front, with another two at the rear. That’s a lot of oomph: Enough, Jaguar says, to manage a 0-60 sprint in about 3.1 seconds. Now that’s not the absolute fastest option out there in crazy powerful EV-land, but that’s definitely in the ball park.
On the range front, the Type 01 packs a 118-kWh battery which the automaker says is good for about 400 miles. Beyond that, it uses a split-pack arrangement (similar to the Hummer EV) where you can use both 400- and 800-volt chargers to top up the battery when needed. Fortunately, this Jag supports a 350-kW DC fast-charger so you (or, perhaps more likely, your chauffeur) won’t sit around too long charging. Jaguar’s quoted 10-to-80% state-of-charge is about 22 minutes.
As for the Type 01’s handling chops, it’s tough to say for the moment before actually driving one. It does get 6 degrees of rear-wheel steering, though, so that helps maneuverability, while you also get standard air springs. While such a large EV is naturally extremely heavy, Jaguar does tout a 50:50 weight distribution, so that should also help avoid any waywardness if you feel the need to get a move on.
The 2028 Jaguar Type 01 will arrive next year, and as expected…it won’t be cheap.
After this reveal, the first Type 01s to actually reach buyers will arrive near the middle of next year. Order books are open, however, with prices landing somewhere around $130,500 to start. Surprisingly, that’s not as much as I expected — certainly not in the same ether as the Cadillac Celestiq, at least right off the bat.
Now, the question remains: Just how many people will buy into this new Jaguar, and where will the brand go from here? Those are a couple matters I’m keen to see play out, but we’ll have to see what announcements come over the horizon. Regardless of where JLR does take things next, they’re certainly starting off this new era with a massive conversation piece.
