Think of the Cadillac ATS as Detroit’s answer to the BMW 3 series and the Audi A4. You can also think of it as the latest new car that has been completely exposed before the official debut at the 2012 Detroit Auto Show.

First the Dodge Dart broke cover (HERE) and now the 2013 Cadillac ATS.

Style wise the new ATS is penned using the same design language as the Cadillac XTS which also debuted at the Detroit Auto Show (see Detroit debut video below).

But unlike the much bigger XTS, the ATS has got the Europeans small luxury performance sedans in its sights.

“Designed with quick, nimble and fun-to-drive dynamics, ATS expands Cadillac’s portfolio into a crucial global segment,” said Don Butler, vice president of marketing for Cadillac. “More than just another new entry, the ATS aims to change the status quo of the European-dominated segment,” he added in a recent GM press release.

The ATS will come with three engine choices including:

  • a base 2.5-liter four-cylinder that produces an estimated 200 horsepower
  • a middle of the road 2.0-liter turbo four with 270 horsepower
  • and a Cadillac’s current 3.6-liter V6, which puts out 318 horsepower

Transmission choices will include a six-speed manual and a Hydra-Matic six-speed automatic.

The 2013 ATS should be a strong performer as it spent plenty of time on the Nurburgring in development. Perhaps more importantly is has the ideal 50/50 weight balance, and it comes with a five-link independent rear suspension….which is a first for Cadillac. The ATS weights just 3,400 pounds…which is very competitive for the segment.
