Mercedes-Benz Teases New CLA One More Time Ahead of CES 2019

Could this be their next tech bomb?

Mercedes made it clear that the new CLA would make its debut at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2019 in Las Vegas, NV. As the show approaches, Mercedes continues to drop hints and teasers about the latest update for their compact four-door coupe. The latest video on Mercedes’ Facebook page is perhaps the most revealing teaser yet, coming out within a day of the car’s full reveal.

The CLA-Class first joined the market in 2013. Since, it has managed to sell between 20,000 and 30,000 units each year. Mercedes-Benz has plenty of other cars that sell better. However, the German manufacturer claims the CLA has been pivotal in attracting new buyer’s to the brand. That could be because it is one of the least expensive Mercedes-Benz vehicles you can buy (at least currently). So, it remains an important car for Mercedes.

What does this teaser show us? Mostly some new design elements. Though, Mercedes won’t show off the entire car until tomorrow, January 8. The most distinct design features shown are the new headlights. You can still see the CLA’s sloping roof line, part of what Mercedes calls a four-door coupe body style. Mercedes also showed hints of special orange trim pieces on the rear valence and front splitter.

On the interior you can spot a dash that looks remarkably familiar to the 2019 Mercedes-Benz A-Class. It would be a good guess to say that the CLA will come with Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX), their latest infotainment system. That system made its debut in the new A-Class sedan, featuring loads of tech and AI integration.

More coming January 8

So what do we not know? Well we don’t know much about drivetrain and features, frankly. Though, it would make a lot of sense for Mercedes to use much of the same equipment from the 2019 Mercedes-Benz A-Class Sedan. That car features a 2.0-liter turbocharged four cylinder that makes 188 horsepower and 220 lb-ft of torque. You have a choice of front-wheel drive or the optional 4MATIC all-wheel drive system, though both come with a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission. Mercedes could do something different here. But, don’t be surprised to see Mercedes use a similar powertrain in the CLA.
