Super Supra? Gazoo Racing Foreshadows Toyota Super Sports Car Based on 1,000 Horsepower Concept [News]

We know the new Supra is coming soon, but Toyota seems to have bigger plans.

Toyota’s Gazoo Racing has taken their Super Sport Concept to the 24 Hours of Le Mans event. The concept, pictured above, is a 1,000 horsepower hybrid based on the setup in their TS050 racing car. Interestingly, however, Gazoo Racing also confirmed that this is the basis of what they call a “next generation super sports car”.

There aren’t too many details at the moment, other than the concept itself, which is powered by a twin-turbocharged V6 as part of the Toyota Hybrid System Racing (THS-R). In the Super Sport Concept, the hybrid system puts out a total of 1,000 PS – or 986 horsepower. Shigeki Tomoyama, Gazoo Racing president said, “Competing in the World Endurance Championship – one of the most demanding motorsports series – and racing at Le Mans helps us to advance the development of our world-leading hybrid electric technology and enables us to transfer the knowledge we gain into our production cars.” Despite the hybrid powertrain, Gazoo Racing also assures the enthusiast community at large that “we will continue our passion for making cars that are truly exciting.”

So, we know there will be a production model, eventually. However, there’s no mention of when such a model will be available to the general public, or what it will look like. Tomoyama continues, “…at some point in the near future, customers will have a chance to get behind the wheel of this incredible machine and experience this astonishing power and driving performance.” Promising words indeed. Could this be a super-Toyota to compete with the likes of serious high-performance cars?
