Cadillac showed off the successor to its SRX, the all-new 2017 XT5 SUV, at the 2015 Los Angeles Auto Show. The SRX has been Cadillac’s best seller in a segment that’s becoming increasingly important for luxury automakers, so there’s little room for error in this new vehicle.

“The all-new XT5 not only enters the most popular segment in the worldwide luxury auto market, it is the first of four new crossovers from Cadillac,” said Cadillac President Johan de Nysschen. “It’s pivotal to our ongoing growth, which is why we’ve developed XT5 from the inside out to provide customers more space, more technology, more luxury and more efficiency.”

The XT5 is completely new and utilizes a unique chassis and structure. While overall dimensions are actually smaller than those of the SRX, the XT5’s wheelbase is two inches longer and the track is one inch wider. These changes have allowed for smaller overhangs in the front and rear as well as more interior space than in the SRX. Cadillac has also achieved a reduction in weight versus the SRX. According to the manufacturer it will be lighter than the SRX, Audi Q5, Mercedes-Benz GLE, without a compromise in safety or body rigidity.

Power will come via the same 3.6L V6 that debuted in the ATS and CTS sedans, with output estimates at 310 hp and 270 lb-ft of torque. The engine features variable valve timing, cylinder deactivation technology (down to four cylinders when conditions allow), and a start/stop function thats kills the engine when the vehicle comes to a rest. The standard gearbox will be an 8-speed automatic, which is the first electronically controlled tranny for the company. Front-wheel-drive is also standard while a driver-controlled all-wheel-drive system will be offered. The AWD system can transfer all of the available torque to either axle and gives the driver the option of disabling the rear drive unit for improved efficiency. Production of the XT5 begins in spring 2016. Check out the video of the 2017 XT5 below and be sure to stay tuned for more coverage from the 2015 L.A. Auto Show.
