If there was a definition of forbidden fruit of the automotive industry in the United States, it would be this silver next generation (B8) Volkswagen Passat. It may as well have a 6-speed manual transmission. This test car is showing off 4Motion and 2.0 TDI badges. If the badges are to be believed, then this is a wagon that American enthusiasts ask for every three or four years, and then patiently continue to wait.

The B8 generation of Passat is already on sale in Europe, but there is no official word for availability on this side of the pond. These test cars appear to be in European specification with US license plates pasted on.

They were caught undergoing hot weather testing in the deserts of United Stated.

Naturally, the B8 Passat will come to the North American market soon. However, it’s not clear how it will be transformed from the European to the American version. Will we see a wagon version? Will we see a 4Motion version? Will it be offered with a manual transmission? If you look at segment leaders: Toyota Camry, Honda Accord, and Nissan Maxima – then the answer would be: No.

However, we are likely to get the turbo-diesel engine.

Here are some shots of the Passat sedan that came along.

Volkswagen is listening to some of the pleas. Check out the 2017 VW Sportwagen Alltrack that was shown at the 2015 New York Auto Show. This is a wagon with all wheel drive, but Volkswagen did not yet specify which engine and transmission choices it will have.
