It is official!

The 2012 Volkswagen Golf R will have 256 horsepower and will retail for $33,900 (plus destination charges) in the U.S.

If you want a sunroof sunroof and navigation the price bumbs up to an MSRPs of $35,490 (two-door) and $36,090 (four-door) again not including destination and handling fees.

That’s a lot cheaper than the European model, but than again the European model comes with 270 HP instead of 256 HP and also can be had with VW’s DSG transmission and special Recaro driving seats. Both models get all wheel drive and special lights.

VW says except to get 19 mpg in the city and 27 mpg from the newest and fastest Golf.

The 2012 Golf R should sprint from  0 to 60 in just about six seconds but we recently had the chance to compare it to less costly Golf GTI in a very impromptu nose to tush drag race.

Check out the results of the race below.
