This past week at the 2019 State Fair of Texas, we won not just one, but two awards from the Texas Auto Writers Association. Both TFLcar and TFLtruck won the organization’s Excellence in Craft competition with their entries. TFL’s own Roman Mica and Andre Smirnov were at the State Fair of Texas to accept the trophies, one each for a TFLcar and TFLtruck video we published in the past year.
TFLcar: THIS Is The Best Off-Roader You Can Buy!
Our winning entry from TFLcar pitched three off-road SUVs against one another in the snowy Colorado rockies. We brought our newly purchased Jeep Wrangler Rubicon along with the 2019 Toyota 4Runner TRD Pro and Mercedes-Benz G550 to see which is truly the best option you can buy. Our Wrangler costs a little over $51,000, while the 4Runner came in just a little under $50,000. The new Mercedes-Benz G-Class, on the other hand, starts at $124,500 — but did that put it on another planet from the other two?
We also introduced our TFL ORI (Off-Road Index) score in this video. We try to gauge an SUV’s off-road ability based on the equipment it comes with from the factory. Things like a two-speed transfer case, underbody protection, good ground clearance and all-terrain tires factor into the score.
Of the video, the EICC judge said:

TFLtruck: Three New Trucks – One Epic Off-Road Comparison: 2019 Ford Raptor vs Chevy Trailboss vs Ram Rebel!
What do you do when you have three off-road half-ton trucks? We took our then-new 2019 Ram 1500 Rebel, the 2019 Ford F-150 Raptor and the 2019 Chevy Silverado 1500 Trail Boss to Moab, Utah for an off-road showdown. After everything was said and done, we all ended up backing the F-150 Raptor, although it is much more than the other two trucks. But how does the Rebel and Silverado perform?
The EICC judge commented on TFLtruck’s video as well:
“Entertaining, suspenseful, humorous, and, yes, “butt-clenching” at times as this team pits one truck against the other in a slew of grueling tests in the wilds of Utah. This review checks all the boxes of an epic vehicle video review.”
While we’re proud to have won two awards at this year’s event, we wanted to take this opportunity to thank all of you in the TFL community for your support.
