The Toyota Camry regained the top monthly spot in midsize sedan sales, eeking out a victory over its nemesis, the Honda Accord.

The Camry rode a 21 percent increase over September 2014 in a month where all competitors saw sales increases from last year. That percentage is also the best month-to-month increase in the group. For the year, the Camry increased its lead over the second-place Accord despite being off by 2.6 percent over 2014’s yearly total.

The Ford Fusion also had a strong sales month to take third place over perennial third-place winner, the Nissan Altima, although the Altima remains in third place overall for the year.

After the top four, the next group is lead by the Chevrolet Malibu, leapfrogging back over the Hyundai Sonata. The Korean sedan is still the top seller in this group of four, even though it’s not even half of what the Camry has sold for the year.

The Sonata’s sister car, the Kia Optima, also leapfrogged over the ever-improving Chrysler 200 to swap places from August, although the 200 continues to be the most improved for the year, with a whopping 96 percent increase over 2014’s yearly total so far.

The bottom three spots are taken up by the Volkswagen Passat, Subaru Legacy and Mazda Mazda6, in that order. The Legacy and the Mazda6 are both up for the year, while the Passat is down by nearly 15 percent.

One interesting note is that month-over-month, all of the cars in the list are down from August, with the exception of the Legacy, which is up more than 46 percent. Perhaps the inevitable march of winter is playing to the all-wheel-drive Legacy’s advantage.
