2014 Mazda3 – a powerful looking little hatch

Mazda has officially unveiled the all-new 2014 Mazda3.  The compact hatchback gets a stretched wheelbase – 2.4 inches longer.  It’s also wider and sits a little lower.  These changes should add a lot of useful passenger and cargo room on the interior.  The overall exterior dimension is actually 1.8 inches shorter, and overall appearance is hunkered down, aggressive, and sexy.  It also scores best-in-class coefficient of drag for quiet and efficient cruising.  The new Mazda3 makes great use of Mazda’s KODO “Soul of Motion” design language and follows closely in the footsteps of the 2014 Mazda6 sedan.

The all-new hatch makes use of the 2.0l and 2.5l Skyactiv-G four cylinder engines.  The smaller one is good for 155 horsepower and 150 lb-ft of twist, while the 2.5 produces 184 and 180.  There was no mention of a diesel power plant in this press release.  However, the 2014 Mazda3 is said to use Mazda’s clever i-ELOOP capacitor based brake energy capture system, that will improve efficiency further.  No official word yet on the MPG ratings for the hatch.

We are looking forward to testing the all-new 2014 Mazda3.  It the meantime, check out this TFLcar review of the 2014 Mazda6.
