Toyota Prius on the verge of being Japan’s best selling car ever

Here’s an astounding fact…The Toyota Prius is the the No. 1 selling car in Japan this year.

Actually, we’re lying.

The Toyota Prius has been the No. 1 selling car in Japan for the last 18 straight months in a row.

To be very specific Toyota sold 297,563 units in Japan in the first 11 months of this year.

And now the Prius is about to do something that might seem preposterous to many, but it looks as if the Prius will overtake the Toyota Corolla as the No. 1 selling car in Japan ever.

Way back in 1990 Toyota sold 300,008 Corollas, and that record number will most likely be surpassed by the Prius before the end of this year.

Of course you have to keep in mind that sales of the Prius this year were bolstered by Japanese government incentives, but at the same time back in 1990 Toyota sold a record number of 7.78 million vehicles. This year that number will be around 5.0 million, or about 36% lower than the 1990 record year.

The news is also good around the glove were sales of the Prius jumped 36% or 438,270 units between January-October.

Check out this fun TFLcar video below were we drag race the current Prius against the old model with the help of our tame Italian race car driver Stighetti.
