Take a look! The all-new 2027 VW Atlas SUV is here. Is it really all-new? It is the most powerful Atlas SUV ever, and it has a couple of surprising features. It makes its world debut this week at the 2026 New York International Auto Show. We are there and we have an in-depth hands-on look. Let’s dig in!
Exterior

Volkswagen says the new 2027 Atlas has all-new exterior sheet metal, interior, and an updated engine. Perhaps some of the suspension components are the only carry over parts from the previous generation. It is based on VW’s latest MQB modular platform, and VW says (just like the original Atlas) this one is designed specifically for the U.S. market. The new Atlas will be built in Chattanooga, TN, just like the current car.
The size of the new Atlas is about the same as before. It has the same 117.x-inch wheelbase. It’s about the same width and height as before, but it is about one inch longer. The interior is about as spacious as before. It is big. A tall and large man (such as myself) can comfortably fit in the first, second, or third rows. It has seating for seven.
Power

Under the hood is the latest iteration of VW’s 2.0-liter EA888 evo5 turbocharged 4-cylinder engine. In the new Atlas is produces 282 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. This is 13 horsepower more than before. It is also 15 lb-ft of torque less than the outgoing model. It is indeed the most powerful Atlas. This is the only engine option at this time. There is no VR6 engine option, and there is no hybrid available. Volkswagen says that a hybrid will come as a mid-cycle refresh. This could take 2-3 years depending on market conditions.
VW says the new turbo engine should be a bit more efficient than before and it will be better at emissions with its latest gasoline particulate filter. The new VW Atlas is still rated to tow up to 5,000 lbs with a towing package. I spoke to the chief engineer, and he told me VW verified this at the SAE J2807 Davis Dam grade and at a more difficult and hotter Death Valley climb test.
- The new Atlas comes with a choice of 18-inch, 20-inch, or 21-inch wheels. You see the 21-inch wheels on this SEL Premium R-line show model. It has new colors: Blackberry, Sacramento Green, and Sandstone. The show car is painted in the Sacramento Green.
Interior

One the inside it has real wood decor. There is a new dash with a choice of 12.9 or 15 inch screens. The front passengers can opt for massaging seats. Best of all, the new Atlas has two Qi2 MagSafe wireless phone chargers. Yes! You phone will stay put when it charges.
There is an additional center airbag for a total of seven, so occupant safety is still top of mind for this car. The new “atmospheres” controller can help set the mood. Depending on the model, there are either 10 or 30 interior light color options.
Rear passengers can enjoy additional b-pillar HVAC vents. The second-row seats can be optioned for heating and ventilation. There are still rear manual sun shades. There is a standard powered rear lift gate.
