Hyundai has a mystery debut headed our way in New York. But what is it?
The New York Auto Show is just around the corner, and most of the major debuts are set to take place on April 1. That’s a bit…ironic, really, given the general tomfoolery that tends to happen on that day each year. Hyundai insists its upcoming world debut is no joke, though, to the point where it cheekily references the prankster’s favorite day of the year in a funky teaser ad on social media.

So, what could we be looking at here? Apart from the floating boulder there, Hyundai is staying unusually tight-lipped about what’s coming. We’d typically see something at this point, like even Toyota did leading up to its electric Highlander SUV debut. We’re just left to infer here, and part of that needs to draw from recent reports suggesting the automaker is developing a new body-on-frame model.
Hyundai confirmed back in late January that it will sunset its Santa Cruz pickup from the lineup. Even if it wasn’t explosively popular, that still leaves the automaker with a void as off-road-style vehicles (be they SUVs or pickup trucks) continue to get hotter year-over-year. Now, this likely isn’t going to be a pickup truck, since CEO José Muñoz said a couple months ago that particular model is coming “before 2030” to build out the portfolio. That’s quite a bit of lead time still to go, and the fact that it’s “building out” the portfolio suggests we’ll already have something of an established baseline in the off-road space to mull over before the truck makes its big debut.
This massive, boulder-sized drop Hyundai’s about to drop on the attendees to the New York Auto Show, then, seems like it will be a more rugged off-road SUV. That’s completely open to interpretation given Hyundai’s dead quietness before today’s equally cryptic teaser, but it does make a lot of sense given what’s already in circulation. The Jeep Wrangler and Ford Bronco are locked in heated competition and have been for several years now. The Toyota 4Runner and Land Cruiser draw tens of thousands of enthusiasts to the brand each year. Upstarts like the Ineos Grenadier SUV seek to claw some market share, to say little of the premium end of the market like the Land Rover Defender and Mercedes-Benz G-Class.
It’s unlikely Hyundai’s effort will compete up at that price point, of course, but something to take on the Wrangler, Bronco or 4Runner? Hell yeah! Let’s not forget that Nissan is planning its own comeback with a new Xterra and, following up closely behind it, a new Mitsubishi Montero. The market is ripe for this sort of rivalry is what I’m getting at, so it’s a golden opportunity for Hyundai to seize the moment.
We’ve had some indication of how Hyundai’s thinking in recent years. Not only did the new Ioniq lineup turn the brand’s EV presence on its head, but we’re also getting much more angular, rugged designs with things like the Crater concept. Hyundai may be running headlong into New York with a production version of that concept — though probably not that berserk or possibly even not as an EV — or we may get something derived from that sort of design study.
What was clear back then, though, is Hyundai’s California design team had a vision to expand its “XRT” off-road brand into far more than what we’ve seen so far. This reveal may be the culmination of that vision, and something you’ll actually be able to buy sooner than you might think.
Stay tuned on April 1 at 9:55 AM Eastern Time and we’ll have much more to share.
