Mitsubishi gets freaky with the Mitsubishi GR-HEV Concept pickup truck at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show

Mitsubishi GR-HEV Concept pickup truck – baby’s got back!
The idea of a hybrid pickup truck is nothing new, General Motors has had them in production for some time. The Mitsubishi GR-HEV Concept isn’t what you would call a regular pickup truck. The Mitsubishi GR-HEV Concept has a 2.5-liter turbodiesel that works in conjunction with an electric motor. Mitsubishi claims emissions below 150g or km of CO2.

Over short distances, the Mitsubishi GR-HEV Concept pickup truck can run solely on electric power. Mitsubishi’s Super All Wheel Control system (S-AWC) works with the hybrid system, altough they are mute as to output. There is no mention of the Mitsubishi GR-HEV Concept’s capabilities as a pickup truck either.

Mitsubishi does mention some of the uses of the AC supply and how the S-AWC system works in conjunction with the power-train:

“This combination can also provide pure electric power on demand with available AC supply (100V~240V), to replace a generator or to allow the use of a 100V winch for instance, as well as the ability to drive over short distances in pure-electric mode.

Concept GR-HEValso uses Mitsubishi’s renowned full-time 4WD technology, featuring Super All Wheel Control (S-AWC) integrated vehicle dynamics control system to deliver high stability traction and driving performance under all road conditions.

This HEV-dedicated driveline uses S-AWC to tailor output and braking to each wheel for every drive mode (2L, 4H, 4HL, 4LL) selected by the driver to help when facing difficult driving conditions:Mitsubishi-Hybrid-Pickup-6[2]

  • Safer, sure-footed all-terrain performance over mud, sand, snow-covered surfaces as S-AWC system leverages motor’s instant response and controls braking force at each wheel.
  • Torque regulation for instant response and excellent all-terrain performance.
  • Improves stability when towing.” – – Mitsubishi Media UK

We don’t have enough small pickup trucks in the United States and I am keenly aware of how good Mitsubishi’s trucks are overseas. granted, we do have the Outback which is, pretty much, all new.  I don’t have any additional information about that crossover as Mitsubishi won’t allow TFLCar to press events.

Regardless, they could bolster their sales in the USA with a vehicle that represents forward thinking like the Mitsubishi GR-HEV Concept pickup truck.

2.5-litre turbodiesel joining an electric motor that drives the front wheels. Though it can run briefly on electric power alone, the GR-HEV doesn’t boast such an electric-focused set-up as the the Outlander PHEV, which will manage over 50 miles on electric power alone when it reaches UK roads later this year. But by pick-up standards it’d be a veritable eco-revolution: Mitsubishi claims real-world emissions below 150g/km of CO2.

Check out this Mitsubishi video from TFLCar!

I hope Mitsubishi can hold on and bring its new vehicles to the United States – they are on such thin ice as it is.
