48.5 mpg…that’s what the stock V-6 Mustang managed to average as Ford put on a challenge to promote the car as well the car’s 31 mpg (as rated by the government).

Ford said it was trying to break 1000 laps at the Bristol speedway, and the car actually managed to go 1,457 laps on the tank of gas.

We have a sneaking suspicion that Ford knew the car would easily exceed 1000 laps.

To see a Mustang post average fuel economy of 48.5 mpg while running at Bristol is impressive,” said Dave Pericak, Mustang chief engineer.  “The new V-6 engine along with the advanced six-speed transmission in the car is a key element in delivering both fuel economy and performance for Mustang.”

No word yet from Ford as to who exactly won a new V-6 Mustang in THIS contest to guess the eventual number of laps the car would run, but Ford did say that they received 51,000 entries with 22 guessing the right number of laps.
