Toyota has paid a record fine of $16.4 million without admitting any guilt as part of a fine levied by the U.S. Transportation Department.

As you may recall from THIS story Toyota failed to notify the drivers and authorities about potential "sticky" accelerator gas pedals for months. The law requires that a car company disclose any known safety defects within five business days.

The U.S. Transportation Department accused Toyota of knowing hiding a safety defect and thus levied the largest fine as permitted by current law.

Toyota paid the fine without acknowledging any guilt. A spokesman for Toyota could not be reached for comment.

The U.S. Transportation Department is still investigating Toyota for other possible safety violations tied to the recent recall of 8.5 million vehicles globally.
