Dodge Hellcat Widebody vs. Jeep Trackhawk!
Two 707-horsepower engines from the same factory. Two decidedly different applications. Both completely outrageous vehicles. So which one is the best use of all that power? The 2018 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat Widebody or the 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk? TFL’s Roman Mica had a chance this week to drive both vehicles back to back on the winding roads outside Portland, Oregon and pick a winner. Among the attributes he considered:
Trackhawk
PROS:
- AWD makes the Jeep faster off the line than the RWD Hellcat
- AWD actually makes it driveable wherever the snow flies
- Four doors and a real back seat plus a cargo hatch
- Can tow 7,700 pounds
CONS:
- At $99,965 it’s the most expensive Jeep ever.
- Not really suitable for off-roading anywhere.
- 5 lb-ft. torque less than the Hellcat (645 lb-ft. vs. 650 lb-ft.)
- Despite all that power, it’s a comparatively subdued ride.
Hellcat Widebody
PROS:
- Burn outs! Thanks to its RWD set-up, even with wider rubber.
- $72,590 gets you one.
- 195 mph top speed vs. 180 mph in the Trackhawk. Smokes the Trackhawk in the 1/4 mile.
- Angry, raw presence, sound, and experience behind the wheel.
CONS:
- Burn outs mean buying new rubber every year or sooner.
- Pretty useless back seat.
- Can’t tow anything.
- Too much power to drive when on icy or snowy roads.
