Volkswagen has seen the future, and it actually looks pretty good. Meet the ID. Space Vizzion Concept, the latest iteration of the company’s forthcoming all-electric models riding on the MEB platform. Of course, these are artistic renderings rather than an actual working prototype, but we will have the chance to see it at the LA Auto Show on November 19.
Now, VW calls this ID. Space Vizzion a crossover, but they’re not fooling anyone. In the release, they say it combines “the aerodynamic characteristics of a Gran Turismo with the spaciousness of an SUV.” Sure, it may not sound sexy to call it a wagon, but with the sad passing of the Golf Alltrack, this does show us that there’s still some life left in wagons yet. And as they go, this is a strikingly handsome example — a more stylish alternative to the likes of the ID. Crozz and similar crossovers Volkswagen will produce down the line.
This ID. Space Vizzion will launch in late 2021, according to Volkswagen’s announcement. Volkswagen says there will be “different versions” for North America, Europe and China, so what we’re looking at here is likely subject to some change. The company will likely dial the styling back a bit, for example. That said, it still looks promising a stylish crossover alternative. VW claims it’s also capable of 300 miles on a charge per EPA standards.
What about the interior?
Inside, the “space” part of the Space Vizzion Concept really shines. It looks appropriately futuristic, but offers some insight regarding the layout and controls. We expect some level of autonomous driving, but there are still conventional controls in this concept. A large, Tesla-like infotainment screen dominates the center stack. Actually, there isn’t much of a “stack” to speak off, suggesting most of the controls have been relegated to the infotainment system rather than physical buttons.
While the seats look like they’re leather, Volkswagen says they’re actually made using sustainable materials. The so-called “AppleSkin” is touted as a vegan alternative to traditional leather seats and trim.
