As the nameplate celebrates four decades, it's pulling in cues from the original model

This latest 2027 Nissan Pathfinder takes you back to the ’80s, burgundy interior and all.

There’s a ton to keep up with in the auto industry from year to year, so you might have missed an important anniversary. This upcoming year marks the 40th for the Nissan Pathfinder, and the automaker is nodding back to the original with this Special Edition model.

When it first launched in 1986, this particular version sported red, red and more red as an option for its interior. The new model mostly brings that back, as the Pathfinder Special Edition gets a similar red for the door cars, seats and instrument panel.

Now, the 2027 Nissan Pathfinder Special Edition, much like the other generations that succeeded that original version, is a markedly different animal today. The automaker moved one of its most iconic nameplates away from a boxy two-door SUV with a swing gate out back and a rear tire. We’re still talking about a three-row family SUV, though it does still have the 3.5-liter V6 under the hood putting out 284 horsepower and 259 lb-ft of torque through a 9-speed automatic transmission.

The Special Edition package gets you a few other stylistic tweaks, but that’s pretty much it. You get 20-inch alloy wheels, special SE est. 1986 badges, and a few other goodies above your usual SL model: Namely, the 12-speaker Bose audio system, panoramic moonroof, sunshades and second-row captain’s chairs.

Since you do get that package thrown in, the 2027 Nissan Pathfinder Special Edition gets a price to suit. MSRPs come in at $48,965 for the front-wheel drive version, while going for all-wheel drive will set you back another $2K for $50,965 (as do other Pathfinder trims where AWD is an option).
