Volkswagen is showing another look at the future of the ID electric car family. This time it’s the ROOMZZ prototype SUV that offers around 300 electric horsepower, AWD capability, city practicality, and a luxurious interior. Oh yea, it’s also promising autonomous driving with IQ.DRIVE.

Here is everything we know so far about this future SUV that is making its debut at the Shanghai Auto Show. VW says the ROOMZZ is going on sales in markets around the globe in 2021.

Electric 4MOTION AWD

VW presents the next version of the 4MOTION all-wheel-drive system with an electric motor configuration that is capable of powering both front and rear axles.

The front electric motor is making about 75 kW, which the rear is twice more powerful at 150 kW. The car is able to transfer and adjust power according to driving conditions. Together, the two electric motors add to about 300 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque.

When all-wheel-drive is not needed, the car can operate in rear-wheel-drive only mode.

VW claims that the ROOMZZ is able to accelerate 0-62 MPH in 6.6 seconds. This SUV does not have the power to match the blazing quick acceleration times of the Tesla Model X.

Driving Range & Charge Times

The ROOMZZ is equipped with a relatively large 82 kWh battery pack. It’s not as big as the one in the Tesla, but it still allows the VW SUV a total driving range of approximately 280 miles (depending on the rating system).

The system is capable of 150 kW charging. It means that 80% charge can be added in about 30 minutes with “fast charging”.

VW ID ROOMZZ – “floating dash”

It does not appear to be a Tesla Model X killer on performance. The VW ROOMZZ is focused on interior comfort, layout, and next level of autonomous driving technology.

Here is a look at the ID BUZZ, which Volkswagen says will reach production in 2022.
