Your Finger Could be Your Next Key: Hyundai Reveals Smart Fingerprint Technology

We have been unlocking our smartphones with our fingerprint for years.

Now, Hyundai wants to use the same technology to unlock and even start our personal vehicles of the future. It’s called Hyundai Smart Fingerprint Technology.

How does it work?

Based on the pictures Hyundai sent out, this system looks partially like an evolution of a keyless entry system. There is a fingerprint scanner on the outside of the door handle. After it determines that you are in-fact the car’s owner, it will unlock the doors and let you in. However, Hyundai also included a version of this system that works with the car’s ignition. Once you have scanned your fingerprint to unlock the doors, you can also scan your fingerprint to start the car, with the scanner located inside the push-button start button.

What else can it do?

There are the security benefits to this technology, but what other features can integrate with a fingerprint reader? Currently, many manufacturers use different keys to identify different driver profiles. However, that information could be tied to a fingerprint instead. Each unique fingerprint can save settings like seating position, HVAC control settings, radio stations and more.

Is it Secure?

Hyundai Smart Fingerprint Technology aims to make your car harder to break into and steal. But how much more secure could it actually be? According to Hyundai, very secure.

“The technology’s chance of misrecognizing another person’s finger print as the driver’s is only 1 in 50,000 making it five times more effective than conventional vehicle keys, including smart keys.”

Plus, the car will continue to learn through dynamic software updates that will continue to increase the system’s success rate, according to Hyundai.

When will it be in my car?

Hyundai plans to roll out this technology “in select markets” with plans to “gradually expand to other markets.” However, they did not specify which markets that would be in particular.
