It’s another battle of the hot hatches as the Mk5 GTI and Fiesta ST take to the track!
By now, our 2017 Ford Fiesta ST has taken on sedans, crossovers, and even a Mustang Bullitt. Its 1.6-liter turbocharged engine, churning out 197 horsepower and 202 lb-ft of torque, has gained it some notable victories. Other times, it wasn’t quite able to take the wins in our newest gameshow, “Is It Faster Than a Hot Hatch?” Now, the Fiesta faces a new contender. This time, it’s the Mk5 Volkswagen GTI.
However, this isn’t just any Mk5 Volkswagen GTI. Owner Mike has fitted aftermarket mods to this 2009 model to make his hot hatch even hotter. Thanks to a cold air intake, turbo back cat-less exhaust, plasma coil packs and a stage 2 REVO tune, the GTI makes an estimated 300 horsepower. That’s up from the 200 horsepower figure Volkswagen’s hot hatch produced when it was new nine years ago. But, is it indeed faster than a Ford Fiesta…ST?

Rev Battle showdown
Before we get to the actual showdown between these two hot hatches, we need some dramatic build-up. It’s a classic turbo-versus-turbo rev battle on the IMI Motorsports track! Despite the Fiesta’s good showing – actually revving up near redline – the GTI has a deeper tone with its aftermarket exhaust.
After the rev battle showdown, it’s time for a hot lap! Who will be faster around the track: Andre in the tuned 2009 Volkswagen GTI, or Tommy in the Ford Fiesta ST? Check out the video above to find out!
