Emme has been waiting with great anticipation ever since the fourth generation 2016 Mazda MX-5 was revealed September 2014. As a true Miata enthusiast, Emme is ready to give her review of the iconic roadster and tell us how it stands up to earlier generations. In this video Emme will compare the 2015 MX-5 ND with the second and first generation NB and NA Miatas.
With devoted commitment, Mazda has taken the classic roadster ideal and updated it for a whole new generation of enthusiasts. The original Miata represents the pinnacle of 1980s Japanese design and engineering simplicity—a much better “retro” homage than the VW Beetle or Ford Thunderbird ever was. Over the years, the Miata has aged gracefully, fostering a strong legacy and following of enthusiasts.
The 2016 Mazda MX-5 is motivated by a 2.0-liter DOHC in-line 4-cylinder engine good for 155 horsepower and 148 lb-ft of torque. Much to Emme’s delight, the 6-speed manual is standard equipment and the 6-speed automatic an available option. Compared to the previous generation NC, the 2016 MX-5 has less power, but more importantly it carries 150 pounds less weight. That is pretty significant when total curb weight is only 2,332 pounds when equipped with the manual transmission (2,381 with the 6-speed automatic).
Lighter weight translates to an agile and nimble ride on the road, and a 25% increase in fuel economy over the 2015 model. EPA-estimated fuel economy is 27 mpg in the city, 34 mpg on the highway, 30 mpg combined when stirring the gears manually. The 6-speed auto-box has taller gearing and is estimated to get 36 mpg on the highway.
