And the most stolen new car is….

2009-Audi-A8-Sedan-1

According to the FBI’s statistical arm report the most stolen new car in the country is the Audi A8.

OK, to be precise the Audi S8 had the highest theft rate: 8.81 thefts per 1,000 vehicles produced in 2009…the latest year the government has so far reported these sort of car thefts.

Actually, the most stolen car in 2009 (at least in terms of number of cars stolen) was also the 2009’s best-selling car…the Toyota Camry.

But let’s stick with the highest theft rates. Following the Audi A8, and rounding out the top five, were the following cars:

-Ford Shelby GT500 Mustang, with 8.61 thefts per 1,000 vehicles

– BMW with M5 7.58 thefts per 1,000 vehicles

– Dodge with Charger, with 6.47 thefts per 1,000 vehicles

– Honda S2000, 5.60 with thefts per 1,000 vehicles.

The good news?

Car thefts have reached their lowest level at least since 1967, according to the National Insurance Crime Bureau.
