Volkswagen Delays U.S. ID.7 U.S. Launch

According to the automaker the Volkswagen ID.7 will hold off on launching in the U.S. and Canada – because of “market-driven choices.”

Demand for EVs has cooled in recent months, and that might have something to do with the Volkswagen ID.7’s delayed launch in North America. It’s possible that Volkswagen is pouring more resources towards its launch of the soon-to-be-released ID.Buzz electric minivan. The ID.Buzz is eagerly awaited in the United States, which is well behind Europe’s acquisition of the quirky van. If the Buzz is released on time, it will be the first in its class on our shores.

The ID.7, on the other hand, is an all-electric sedan that competes directly with the Hyundai Ioniq 6, and its overall size (195.3-inches long) sets it between the Tesla Model 3 and Model S. The interior is a step up from the ID.4, and the swooping rear deck is actually a hatchback design. That extra utility is a plus, but it’s still a sedan, and (like EVs) sedans aren’t as popular as they once were.

This may have something to do with Volkswagen’s rather limited statement:

“Volkswagen is committed to making market-driven choices while listening to our customers. As market dynamics continue to change, Volkswagen is delaying the introduction of the ID.7 sedan in the U.S. and Canada.”

Other details about the Volkswagen ID.7

At launch, whenever that is locally, expect a rear-drive EV that makes 282 horsepower. An all-wheel drive version will enter the market later on. WLPT (Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicle Test Procedure) range with the 82 kWh battery is 386 miles. We believe Volkswagen is aiming for around 300 miles EPA. The good news is that the ID.7 is sporting the new powertrain that the automaker has been working on. It’s supposed to be far more advanced than when we currently have.

Estimated pricing is currently sitting in the $50,000 zone, but that has yet to be conformed. More details about the ID.7 can be read (here), and we will keep you in the loop with further announcements.
